Object description

Several rooms on the first floor of the Blackheads house have been rebuilt. They used to house the archive of the Order of Blackheads (“Melngalvji”), a series of legendary items, and significant artworks. At one time the room contained the largest collection of silver in the Baltic States, along with a collection of tobacco pouches, a set of armour, and sculptures of three Medieval patrons of the Blackheads. These have now been scattered among Latvian, German and Russian museums, but there was a time when the items were all in one place and could be proudly presented to the building’s guests. Today the room has fireplaces, 19th century furniture, paintings or reproductions, four 18th-century Moorish sculptures, and other treasures or their copies. A collection of Latvian state honours – the Order of Three Stars and various medals – can be inspected. The Museum Room, in turn, holds the new collection of silver of the Blackhead House.
